Comrade James Adediran of the Finance and Accounts department of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO) has emerged Chairman of the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE), NICO branch at the just concluded union election in Abuja.

At the keenly contested election which took place at the NICO Head Office, Kigoma Street, Wuse Zone 7, Abuja-FCT on Tuesday, 26th June, 2018 and adjudged to be free and fair by stakeholders present, Comrade James Adediran pulled a total number of One Hundred and Eleven (111) votes to emerge winner against Comrade Buba Nwajim who got only Eighty (80) votes.

Giving his acceptance speech on behalf of the newly elected executives, the Chairman thanked members of staff for the confidence reposed in them to serve the union for the next three years in such capacity but pleaded for support to from all to enable them carry out their duty. “This work cannot be done alone. We need each other and it is my belief that with you, we can all claim our rights” he said.

Speaking before the election, the Acting Chairperson, FCT Council of the Union, Comrade Briggs Diepiribo thanked members of the union for the peace they have maintained in the Institute with particular thanks to those who have served the union in one way or the other, especially the outgoing caretaker committee which he acknowledged their ability to amicably hold forth the leadership of the union for the past three months.

He however enjoined members to make choices of people of proven integrity and strong character who will lead the union in the next three years; people who will lead in a manner that will not promote rancour and acrimony but leaders who can represent them and speak on their behalf.

“I want to implore you to make choices of the people you know can really carry out the duties you want to give them. People who are of strong character; people you know that will not constitute themselves as emperors after election and become larger than the entire congress”.

According to him, it is mandatory for the executives to call for congress every quarter and failure to do so, they should be reported to the Council without delay for necessary action.

Comrade Briggs further pledged the commitment of the FCT Council to work together with the chapter in advancing the issues of welfare among others as it may affect the entire staff.

Others elected into various positions are Comrades Nkem Batholomew (Assistant Chairperson); Ibrahim Jibril (Secretary); Omanayi Peter (Assistant Secretary); Lambart Ndubuaku (Assistant Secretary-Finance); Chioma Akanobi (Assistant Secretary/Welfare); Fatima Suleiman (Treasurer) and Vincent Eni (Assistant Secretary-Information).

Of the above elected officials, Comrades Ibrahim Jibril (Secretary); Fatima Suleiman (Treasurer); and Vincent Eni (Assistant Secretary-Information) emerged unopposed as no one contested against them.
