The Acting Executive Secretary, National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO), Mr. Louis Eriomala has said henceforth, the Institute will not promote members of staff who are students in the NICO Training School either in Abuja or Lagos campuses who have less than 2.5 Cumulative Gross Point Average (CGPA).

Eriomala made this known when the Academic Board of the Institute met recently at the Institute’s training complex in Lagos to consider, amongst other matters, the first semester results of Postgraduate and Diploma students for the 2017/2018 Academic Session.

While observing that most students have lackadaisical attitude towards their studies, the Acting ES charged the students to sit up or voluntarily withdraw from the programme. In his words “Henceforth, any student with less than a Cumulative Gross Point Average (CGPA) of 2.5 points will not get automatic elevation to the next grade level but will be required to sit for the Institute’s staff promotion examination”.

He however advised the students to research more on notable professionals in culture by conducting interviews and rigorous investigations on the lives and works of Thespians, Writers, and so forth, stressing that in order to enhance the competence of staff and students of the Institute, NICO Management will upgrade the NICO Library to acceptable standards.

At the meeting, the Board scrutinized in detail, the results of students during the last examination and deliberated extensively on the performance of students with emphasis on areas that require further improvements and, thereafter, approved the results for publication. The approved results have since been pasted on the Notice Board of the School.

In conclusion, the NICO’s Acting Executive Secretary affirmed that NICO Training School is a good cultural product that must be sold to the rest of Nigerians. He therefore called on members of NICO staff to think outside the box on how to market the school to prospective students and indeed all culture stakeholders.

In attendance was Professor Emmanuel Dandaura, who represented Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK); Mr. Ibrahim Lawal (Head, NICO Liaison Office) as well as other academic staff of the Lagos Training School.
