The Acting Executive Secretary, National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO) has said for Nigeria to promote a good maintenance culture, there is need for positive attitude by Nigerians towards the nation’s infrastructure.

Eriomala made this known while delivering his welcome address at the Quarterly Public Lecture organized by the Institute at the Peace & Conflicts Resolution Complex, African First Ladies Peace Mission Secretariat Conference Hall on Tuesday, March 26, 2019.

According to him, the present infrastructure decay and dilapidation in the country is as a result of poor maintenance culture which he attributed to the negative public attitude towards government projects.

“It is worthy to note that governments at all levels of the federation spend billions of naira every year in the provision of roads, buildings, railway tracks, power etc. In order to sustain these developmental projects, there is need to protect them.”

Identifying factors responsible for the poor state of roads and vandalized electricity projects all over the country, Eriomala disclosed that ignorance and the little or no fund allocated for the maintenance of infrastructure are responsible. Also that maintenance is time bound and should be undertaken when due.

He lamented that while maintenance culture has proven to be a major contributor to sustainable development in developed nations where buildings and roads built decades ago still functions optimally, the case is different with developing nations where infrastructure are left to the point of total decay and dilapidation before repairs are embarked upon.
