The Executive Secretary, National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO), Dr. Barclays Foubiri Ayakoroma, has advocated for the training and retraining of staff, for effective and efficient service delivery towards achieving the vision and goals of the Institute.

Ayakoroma gave this charge at the opening ceremony of a 2-day In-house Training Workshop for Admin & Human Resources and Finance & Account staff of NICO, held at Livia Hall of Bolton White Apartments, Wuse Zone 7, Abuja, on Thursday, 1st September, 2011.

Delivering his address at the In-house Training Programme, the first of its kind in the Institute, the ES stated that in the course of his familiarization visits to the zonal offices, he saw the training needs for staff in various units and departments, because most of them were not in-tune with the demands of their jobs, while others who had been transferred to new units found it difficult to adapt to the peculiarities of such units, stressing that with training and retraining, “we will all know what we ought to do in NICO”.

Speaking further, the ES said the essence of bringing together all Admin & Human Resources staff from the zonal offices and Abuja head office, is for them to be put through basic administrative practices in line with the Public Service Rules, while Finance and Account staff will learn basic financial regulations and accounting procedures for them to handle all Finance and Accounts matters, without waiting for the head office to further perform such functions for them.

According to him, the programme for both new and old staff of the Institute is also an attempt at creating a kind of networking among staff of the Institute, for them to get to know the core competence of colleagues from other zonal offices.

The ES informed that the training and retraining process for staff will be carried out for all the departments, so that staff of the various units will know their respective duties and what is expected of them, in particular and the Institute in general, which would position them in good stead for effective and improved productivity.

Present at the event were the Director, Admin and Human Resources, Barr. Abayomi O. Oyelola, mni, Director, Research and Documentation, Mr. Festus Ihenetu, Director, Orientation and Cultural Affairs, Prince Dele Olusa, Director, Finance and Accounts, Mr. Godson Ordu, SA to the ES, Mr. Ebi Nelson Campbell, Assistant Director (Protocol), Mr. Alex Omijie, a resource person for the programme, Mallam Abubakar Zaki, and staff of the Institute.
