NSCDC Ondo Command Ready To Partner NICO

The Ondo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Mr. Fasiu Ayinla Adeyinka, has promised a more committed partnership with the South-West Zonal Office of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO).

The Commandant made this known on Thursday, 4th February, 2016, when the NICO South-West Zonal Coordinator, Mr. James Imohiosen led a team of staffers on a courtesy visit to him in his office.

On the request for collaboration, Mr. Adeyinka promised a robust partnership with the Institute on value re-orientation programme as this will help them achieve their aims of combating vandalization of pipelines, kidnapping, terrorism, cultism and wanton destruction of government properties, which have become vices in Nigeria society.

He appreciated the visit and acknowledged the fact that NICO is a familiar name to the Corps, and that while he was in Owerri, he granted permission to some of his men to partake in the language programme organized by the Institute’s South-East Zonal Office.

He stated further that paucity of funds might hinder the participation of his men in the Training School this year but promised to make them available for the one-month indigenous language programme, which comes up later in August this year.

Speaking earlier, the NICO South-West Zonal Coordinator, Mr. James Imohiosen, while thanking the Commandant and his team for the quick response given to the request for the visit, equally appreciated the Command for the warm reception that was accorded to him, adding that the visit was necessary in order for him to familiarize with relevant agencies towards achieving NICO’s objectives of harnessing culture for national development and also to seek for collaboration on ways of sensitizing of parents and their wards against Western influences on the nation’s cultural values.

The Zonal Coordinator took time to inform that National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO), a Parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, was established by Act 93 of 1993, which was in response to the United Nations declaration of the World Decade for Cultural Development (WDCD: 1988-1997) that acknowledged among other things, the cultural dimension of development.

According to him, NICO’s programmes include, among others, the One Month Nigerian Indigenous Language Programme (NILP); Promoting Nigerian Dress Culture; NICO Cultural Clubs in Secondary Schools; Annual National Conference for Traditional Rulers on Culture, Peace and Security; and the NICO Training School in Lagos and Abuja, which runs Diploma, Advanced Diploma, and Postgraduate Diploma in Cultural Administration.

He, however, stressed the importance of understanding the culture and language of the any host community to the security operatives in the course of carrying out their duties, and encouraged the Commandant to make his men available for the one-month NILP and the Training School, which the admission is ongoing.

Present to receive the NICO team were some senior officers of the Command, which included, Yinusa Hashiru (Deputy Controller and Second in Command), Majekodunmi Abidemi (Deputy Controller and Head, Intelligence), Olariche Jonathan (Assistant Controller and Head, Training), Ekpitem Ebrus (Assistant Controller and Head, Technical), Ajayi Odunayo (Assistant Controller and Head, Finance), Agoro Ayodeji (Assistant Controller and Head, Asset and Management), Balogun Kayode (Deputy Superintendent and Public Relation Officer), Ekundayo Lewis (Deputy Superintendent and Protocol Officer), Olakanse Folashade (Superintendent).

On the entourage of the Zonal Head were Mrs. Ruth Oyenekan (Head, Admin and Human Resources), Mrs. Ogechukwu Nwokorie (Head, Orientation and Cultural Affairs), Mr. Chris Sodje (Head, Research and Documentation), Mr. Ogaga Anakpoha (Head, Corporate Affairs), Mr. Stephen Ayomoba and Mr. Alfanla Mustapha, both of Corporate Affairs.
