The saying goes that, “All work without play makes Jack a dull boy;” and the Association of Heads of Federal Government Establishments, Enugu State did just that on Thursday, 14th August, 2014, by organizing a one-day programme aimed at ensuring good physical and social well-being of its members.
Declaring the event open, the Chairman of the Enugu State chapter of the Association, Mr. Uchella Umunna Ngozi, disclosed that the Association conceived the idea to remind members of the importance of healthy living, as spearheaded by the State Director of National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mr. Isaac Onukwube.
The road walk, with the theme, “Walk for Health,” started at the Federal Secretariat, Enugu, with participants dressed in black and white, and went through Nkpokiti Junction, to Ogui Road, and ended at Michael Okpara Square, Independent Layout, Enugu.
The road show was accompanied by officers and men of Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and health workers from the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu, who were on ground to take care of any eventuality.
In her seminar presentation, on the topic, “The Benefit of Exercise/Oral Health,” the guest speaker, Mrs. Izunma Imo, a Deputy Director at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu, examined the need for federal workers to exercise regularly, as it helped to improve oxygen circulation, reduced ageing and, more so, fought infections.
She also encouraged workers to take the issue of exercise seriously because human beings were complex machines that needed regular maintenance to fight diseases like cancer, arthritis, and so on, and enjoined the organizers to make the programme a regular one to guarantee a healthy work-force.
On his part, the second speaker, Mr. Victor Adamu from the Federal School of Dental Technology, Enugu, harped on the need for workers to have good oral health care and dental cleaning, encouraging all to maintain good lifestyles, avoid smoking, as well as in-take of too much sugar and alcohol, which could endanger their lives, further advising all to eat right and avoid stress to avoid malnutrition.
In her vote of thanks, the State Director, Code of Conduct Bureau, Mrs. Lucy Ijetta, expressed appreciation to all who participated in the exercise and those that contributed to the successful organization of the maiden edition of the event, promising to improve in subsequent editions.
The State Head, National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO), Enugu, Mr. Nwajagu Nnaemka, led some members of staff of NICO Enugu State Office, to participate actively in the exercise.
