The Civil Society Groups for Good Governance (CSGGG) on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, presented a “National Cultural Statesmanship Award” on the Executive Secretary/CEO of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO), Otunba Biodun Ajiboye.

The Coalition of over 180 civic organizations across Nigeria said the award is in recognition of Ajiboye’s leadership excellence, cultural renaissance and a tribute to his courage, patriotism and tireless efforts in elevating culture to its rightful place in nation-building.

Presenting the award on behalf of the National Executive Council of CSGGG, Okeke Amarachi said the Coalition supports the transformative leadership, strategic innovations, and enduring contributions of the NICO helmsman towards restoring cultural identity, which it said is already inspiring a generation of cultural stakeholders, thereby leaving an indelible mark in the annals of public service.

“Today, we are not just presenting an award. We are making a bold statement in support of what you are doing in the cultural sector. Your leadership at NICO has not only rekindled national interest in our rich cultural heritage but has also restored public confidence in the role of culture as a powerful instrument for unity, education, diplomacy and development”.

“We have observed with admiration, how you have strategically repositioned the Institute through landmark initiatives such as the revival of indigenous language programmes; the establishment of the Nigerian Academy for Cultural Studies (NACUS); and your relentless advocacy for cultural integration in public institutions amongst others”.

“Your foresight in embracing digital innovation to promote Nigeria’s cultural assets globally is a testament to your forward-thinking leadership and unwavering commitment to preserving and protecting our national cultural identity”.

Responding, Otunba Ajiboye appreciated the Coalition for its thoughtfulness and assiduous study of the landmark achievements the Institute has recorded under his watch, saying he is encouraged by the monumental and essential recognition.

He therefore dedicated the award to the Management and entire Staff of NICO and all that believe in the country, stating that with continued support from government, the new initiatives currently ongoing in the Institute, especially the World Orisha Congress (WOOCON) can generate between $10 to 12 billion for the country annually.
