The National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO) Chapter of the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service, Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPTRE), on Tuesday, June 19, 2012, elected new officials to take over the leadership of the union.

The election, which was conducted at the NICO Head office, located at 23, Kigoma Street, Wuse Zone 7, Abuja, by officials of the FCT Chapter of AUPTRE and was acclaimed to be free, fair and transparent by all staff, who participated in the voting process, saw Comrade Promise Onyekachi Nwanguma, of the Admin and Human Resources Department, taking the baton of leadership from Comrade Segun Iroko, as the new Chairman of the NICO chapter of the Union.

With one hundred and ninety seven members of staff registered as eligible voters for the election process, also to serve with the new Chairman, Comrade Nwanguma, are Comrade Fred Ananwan also of Admin and Human Resources Department (Vice Chairman), Comrade Adamu Ndanusa of the Legal Unit, Office of the Executive Secretary (Secretary), Comrade Fabuyi Clement of Orientation & Cultural Affairs Department (Assistant Secretary), as well as Comrade Oluwatoyin Mercy Solomon of the Stores Unit, Finance and Accounts Department (Treasurer).

Others include Comrade Ifeoma Ogbah of the Stores Unit, Finance and Accounts Department (Assistant Secretary – Finance), Comrade Felicia Esedo Chiugo of Research & Documentation Department (Assistant Secretary – Welfare) as well as Comrade Eni Vincent Eni of Research & Documentation Department (Assistant Secretary – Information).

Presenting the new officials to staff, the Chairman of the FCT chapter of the Union, Comrade Aliyu Salihu, said despite his tight schedule, he ensured that he was present to monitor the proceedings of the election personally, emphasizing that it is the spirit, comradeship, and togetherness that bind the union together that made him to come over to see things himself, reiterating that the FCT chapter of the union, under his leadership, stands for fairness and transparency, especially in matters of election and will continue to stand for it.

Officially welcoming the new chairman to the fold of comradeship, Comrade Salihu charged him, as well as staff under the union saying, “Although you have been mandated by the people to lead, you still need their cooperation and support to be able to succeed in office. Good leadership upholds good followership. And for you, the followers, if you are not there for him, he will fail.”

While handing over the constitution of the union to the new Chairman, Comrade Salisu urged him to also ensure that the constitution remains his only guide, saying if he abides by it, he will have a successful tenure in office; otherwise, he is bound to face problems.

In his acceptance speech, on behalf of the new Executive, Comrade Onyekachi Promise Nwanguma, thanked members of the union, for deeming it fit to vote in a new team to serve, pledging that they will do their best to ensure that the confidence bestowed upon them is not betrayed.
