Arch. Philip Iortyer, a People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Chieftain in Benue State, has called on university lecturers to promote university education by publishing, saying, the system as a centre of learning depends much on what it can produce, in terms of research and publications.
Iortyer made this call on Thursday, March 14, 2013, at the Benue State University (BSU) College of Health Sciences Auditorium, Makurdi, during the 50th Birthday Anniversary of the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Charity Ashimem Angya, and public presentation of a Festschrift, Difficult Dialogues in Development, in her honour.
Speaking as Chairman to the event, Iortyer who maintained that the Benue State University, Makurdi, as an Institution is blessed with many intellectuals, further urged lecturers to publish more in order to set standards, stressing that universities across the globe are recognized for their level of research and number of publications.
According to him, “In so many fields, everywhere you go, you have very prominent professors, who are well recognized internationally. In other universities, they do not rely on a PhD to become a professor. I know of many universities, in Oxford and Harvard, where we have people that have bachelor’s degrees that are professors; but when you look at the quality of what they have published, it is so much.”
He further charged lecturers that going into publishing should not just be for the sake of acquiring professorship as many tend to, stressing that without publishing, a university as an institution of higher learning will not be able to be highly reckoned with.
